Adult Inpatient

The Adult Inpatient Unit of the CRC is a 16 bed, single room unit that is housed on the 10th floor of the Harkness Pavilion. Fourteen of the 16 rooms have showers or bathtubs. Patients assigned to the other two rooms have the use of a handicap shower on the unit. Our mission is to expedite and facilitate the collection of quality data in conducting research.

The nursing staff is qualified to initiate and maintain intravenous infusions, obtain EKGs, draw blood, run studies that require frequent or pharmacokinetic specimen acquisition, and process specimens. All of the staff members are also dedicated to providing excellent patient care.

There are two centrifuges; one which has the capability of spinning blood specimens under refrigeration. There are also three freezers on the unit.; a minus 20 C and two minus 80C. Six of our patient rooms are equipped to handle patients who need bedside monitoring, as well as a central monitor and telemetry capability. One of our rooms can be utilized for sleep studies. Over the years, we have conducted studies from every service.

We look forward to having you join our team.

Providing a highly personalized, professional and confidential environment in which nearly 6,000 research visits from more than 50 protocols take place each year, the unit includes four fully-equipped physical examination rooms with private bathrooms, a dental operatory and two interview/consultation rooms. Additionally, the unit has a two phlebotomy stations, a specimen processing area, reception area and participant waiting room. Nursing assistance, skilled phlebotomy services, some specimen processing, EKGs and vital signs are provided by unit personnel.

Additionally, CTSA funded research coordinators support adult clinical research activities in the Emergency Department, Center for Advanced Cardiac Care, Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit and Surgical Intensive Care Unit. These experienced research coordinators are available to support protocol development, assist with IRB submissions, recruit participants and collect research data in these clinical areas.

St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital Center

The inpatient scatter beds and outpatient facilities at the St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center (SLRHC), a satellite of the CRC at the Columbia University Irving Center CTSA, provide infrastructure for clinical research activities with a focus on studies of Nutrition and Metabolism. Unique amenities, including a Human Calorimeter, allow sensitive and specific measurements of Body Composition and Energy Metabolism. These facilities and services make the SLRHC satellite a national resource in this area of research.

The Inpatient Scatter Bed Clinical Research activities occur in specifically designated research patients’ rooms on a general medicine ward, in close proximity to the Clinical Research Office of the CRC personnel, the CRC Physiology Room and the Metabolic Pantry (used for food packaging and serving). Nearby are three rooms for Human Ingestive Studies, and the Two-Chamber Human Room Calorimeter: NY Obesity Research Center facilities also used for CRC protocols.

The Outpatient Clinical Research activities are carried out on the CRC ambulatory care facility (Outpatient Research). This 1,769 square foot space contains four examining rooms, two of which contain hospital beds for prolonged outpatient procedures. The facility is close to Obesity Research Center laboratories and the postdoctoral fellows’ room. Scheduling is done electronically through the SLRHC Intranet, and medical coverage for emergencies and emergency procedures is in place. The Unit is regularly inspected by the Quality Control team of the Hospital Center with regard to JACHO compliance. Pediatric outpatient clinical research studies are supported by CRC personnel in the Pediatric Body Composition Clinical Research area.

The CRC personnel provide routine research services (iv insertions, frequent blood draws, phlebotomy, supervised meal tests, frequent vital signs monitoring, etc.), but are also fully trained in specialized research protocols (meal tests, oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests, various eulglycemic clamps protocols, indirect calorimetry by cart and chamber, supervised exercise testing, etc). Services are provided by the CRC personnel on the inpatient and outpatient units from 7AM till 4PM daily. General nursing services are provided by nurses on the in-patient medical floor for the patients on the scatter beds 24 hours a day. Overnight research personnel could be provided through special arrangement.
