The Bionutrition Research Core of the CRR is multifaceted in its role of facilitating and implementing the nutrition components of all CRR protocols, and specializes in:
  • Assisting investigators with research design, implementation, data collection and analysis.
  • Exicuting controlled feeding studies (via meals prepared on site or outsourced as appropriate) and metabolic studies.
  • Facilitating and monitoring subject compliance.
  • Performing nutrition assessment and nutrient intake collection and training study personnel on using Nutrient Data Systems (NDS, University of Minnesota) for nutrient analysis.
  • Counseling study participants, conducting anthropometric and body composition measurements.
  • Educating professional and non-professional staff, study participants, medical residents, Doris Duke fellows, students from the College of Physicians & Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine rand from the Institute of Human Nutrition, dietetic interns from Teachers' College, NYPH and the public.

A particular focus is the systems regulating energy intake and output that account for the inability of most individuals to maintain a reduced body weight after otherwise successful weight loss. The duration of these in-patient studies is about 9 months per subject. The meticulous assessment and control of composition, quality, and quantity of the liquid formula diet utilized in these studies is absolutely central to their successful completion. The Bionutrition Core prepares and conducts quality control for this formula and also works diligently with all out subjects to make their in-patient stay more rewarding and more education.
