Peter Dayan and Claire S. Riley Appointed to Leadership Roles in the Irving Institute’s Network Capacity
Peter Dayan, MD – Scientific Lead, Hub Liaison Team
Dr. Peter Dayan has been selected to assume the position of Scientific Lead for the Hub Liaison Team (HLT). The Irving Institute is confident that he is eminently qualified for this key position.
Dr. Dayan’s research focuses on the conduct and mentorship of patient-oriented studies relevant to the care of acutely ill or injured children. His main contributions have come through 20-plus years of participation and leadership in multicenter research, including as principal or senior investigator of studies conducted in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), which is the only federally-funded research network for the emergency care of children in the US. He has been a PI of PECARN since 2004. He has been on faculty with Columbia's CTSA since 7/1/2016, most recently as the Associate Director of the Integrating Special Populations Resource. His personal expertise is in conducting patient-oriented research aimed to optimize the diagnostic assessment and clinician decision-making for patients with common chief complaints but uncommon outcomes, such as infants and children with seizures or head trauma. He has trained and continues to mentor future generations of investigators caring for children in the acute care setting.
Claire S. Riley, MD – Co-Director, Hub Liaison Team
Claire S. Riley, MD, has been selected by the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to become a Co-Director of the Hub Liaison Team. Dr. Riley’s leadership and experience allows her to seamlessly step into this new role. She is the Karen L.K. Miller Associate Professor of Neurology at the Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Riley earned an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and a medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her medical training in Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, followed by clinical neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis fellowship training at the Columbia University Multiple Sclerosis Center.
Dr. Riley began her career as Clinical Director of the Yale MS Center, returning to the Columbia Department of Neurology in 2012 to lead the MS Center. Under her leadership the MS Center has become a leading destination for MS and related disease clinical care, trials, clinical and translational research, and training of Clinical Neuroimmunology and MS specialists. In 2020, Dr. Riley was elected to Columbia’s Academy of Clinical Excellence, an elite group of master clinicians recognized by their peers as leaders in the practice of clinical medicine. She also directs the recruitment and characterization of the Snapshot cohort study of MS, which is the prospective component of the National MS Brain Bank, a tissue bank providing pathologic samples to researchers alongside phenotypic and radiographic characterization of the donors.
Drs. Riley and Dayan’s appointments further the Irving Institute’s mission to expand research capacity, strengthen collaborations, and support translational research efforts across Columbia University and beyond.
